Obituary

Claxton,

Flora Cathryn Daniel Hunter, passed away Monday, February 28, 2022. She was born in Claxton, Georgia May 10, 1938 to Sidney Odom and Joseph Andrew Daniel. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, two sisters, Juanita and Ann, two brothers, Johnnie and Ervin, her husband, Rev. Dallas Thompson (originally from Chattanooga, TN), son, Greg and daughter, Joy Cathryn. Later in life during retirement, she married James “Jim” Hunter who also passed away in 2013. She has one niece, Sylvia Waugh (Robert) of McDonough, Georgia, three nephews Johnny Daniel (Jackie) of Rincon, Georgia, Gene Daniel of Richmond Hill, Georgia and Jeff Daniel (Yvonne) of McDonough, Georgia. Flo always had a thirst for knowledge and felt “called” into full time Christian service from age 15. She grew up in the First Baptist Church of Claxton and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pembroke, Georgia at her passing. She was at church in Claxton as a teenager when the adult leaders discussed organizing East Baptist Church. Pastor John Burch and Raleigh Rogers asked her to help organize that church by playing the piano. They started meetings in an old bottling company and that’s when she developed a love for home missions.

After graduating from Claxton High, she began her studies at St. Joseph School of Nursing, Savannah, Georgia to become an RN. After completing her first semester, she transferred to Trevecca Bible College, Nashville, TN and chose Fine Arts, specializing in piano and organ. She had 12 years of piano before leaving home. She received her degree, also attending Towson State Teachers College, Towson, MD. She married Rev. Dallas Thompson and together they pastured Liberty Baptist Church, Portland, Tn, Glen Arm Baptist Church in Glen Arm, MD and organized a new Baptist church in Indianapolis, Indiana. Her husband later attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY, while there she attended a few night classes.

After losing her husband, she returned to her mother’s in Claxton where she attended Savannah University of Cosmetology, Savannah, Georgia and graduated obtaining a license.

Everywhere she lived she taught someone how to play the piano and organized classes. She also spent four years in home mission work with neglected children in Kentucky and Georgia.

At age 38 she began work with Southern Company in Nuclear Security. She retired in 1998, marrying James “Jim” Hunter, returning to her beloved hometown, calling it “God’s Country”.

During retirement, she attended Ogeechee Technical College to learn computer. She developed her own website, naming it, “Come Let Us Study the Bible Together” with this on her home page… “Big Problems? God is Bigger!” (World Missionary) She is now with her wonderful Lord whom she loved and tried to serve. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Cancer Research. A private memorial service will be held later in Savannah.
